Burberry, an iconic British brand, recently made headlines again with the news of another CEO change. In a past life I was part of their buying team and have a different take on it than most.
In its current iteration as a high-end fashion house it’s struggling to find its footing in an evolving market, leaving many to question whether this constant reshuffling at the top is truly beneficial. In my view, it’s reminiscent of football teams frequently changing managers to appease shareholders rather than focusing on long-term strategy and stability.
The CEO Conundrum
Replacing a CEO is no small feat. The due diligence involved in appointing a new leader is extensive, and the chosen strategy is often well thought out. However, sometimes things don’t go as planned, and a change at the helm becomes necessary. Yet, in Burberry’s case, I believe the real issue lies deeper. It’s not just about finding the right leader but about understanding and adapting to the shifting dynamics of the fashion world.
The Changing Face of Fashion
The fashion industry is not what it used to be. There’s a growing desire among luxury consumers to support local artisans as well as embracing the principles of a circular economy. This means a focus on sustainable resources. Burberry has a rich history of being groundbreaking, and now more than ever, it needs to return to its roots and innovate with sustainability in mind.
The movie (poster above) highlighted the support offered to two groundbreaking adventures and the time taken to be innovative in textile development.
Embracing Artisanal Craftsmanship
The suggestion that Burberry should revert to the “Thomas Burberry Jeans” approach of the 1990s is a step in the wrong direction. Instead, the brand should lean into its artisanal heritage. By cutting back on unsustainable practices and focusing on craftsmanship, Burberry can protect its core values and set itself apart in a crowded market. This shift will not happen overnight; it will require time, dedication, and significant cutbacks. But in the long run, it will position Burberry as a brand to watch, one that values quality over quantity.
The Power of a Compelling Narrative
At Social Tailor, we understand the importance of crafting a compelling narrative. For a brand like Burberry, telling the story of its commitment to sustainability and artisanal craftsmanship can resonate deeply with today’s consumers. It’s about more than just selling products; it’s about creating a legacy and building a brand that stands for something meaningful.
Fostering Partnerships and Collaborations
Collaborations can be a game-changer for brands looking to innovate. By partnering with local artisans and sustainable fashion advocates, Burberry can bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the business. Documenting the struggle with these partnerships would not only enhance the brand’s offerings but also demonstrate a commitment to supporting the broader fashion community.
The Way Forward
The CEO changes at Burberry highlight the challenges of navigating the high-end fashion industry.
The road ahead for Burberry will not be easy, it can navigate these turbulent times and emerge stronger than ever. But please do not resort to quick cash and profits from diffusion ranges… does anyone remember the golf range? OMG! Never mind the Thomas Burberry Jeans range, ouch.
