I am in the pursuit of those socially conscious brands to highlight, share and bring to our little corner of the world.
Does such a thing exist? A social conscience and luxury brand.
What is luxury? In the dictionary it simply states: “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense.” In economics, a luxury good is a good for which demand increases more than proportionally as income rises, so that expenditures on the good become a greater proportion of overall spending. Luxury goods are in contrast to necessity goods, where demand increases proportionally less than income.
Or to be more precise: I am interested in highlighting those luxury products, which bring sunshine into our lives whilst being grounded in an ecologically conscious way.
What is a social conscious in relation to a business? In brief it means: “a sense of responsibility or concern for the problems and injustices of society.” In Japan* for example, companies based there are demanded by the government to report what influences their environmental policies have on the citizens, on a yearly basis. This transparency allows citizens to develop their social conscience in response to the decisions of these broader institutions. And what about the ethics of those businesses? Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that involves systematising, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. The field of ethics, along with aesthetics, concerns matters of value.
Suffice to say, I am embarking on a series of interviews with companies, individuals and brands that speak to these ideals, that have a social conscious and produce what can be seen as, luxury.
I am asking you, dear reader, who should I approach?
(conscious/ conscience. Both words have to do with the mind, but it’s more important to be conscious, or awake, than conscience, or aware of right and wrong. Remain conscious while listening to your friend’s moral dilemma so you can use your conscience to give good advice.)
