I remember at college the trials of working with Fur (although clearly not real) the unique stitch machine required to bind the seams – the detailed edging (trimming and folding in) to ensure multiple seams worked together and the delight in finding a lining that disguised the extent you had to go in order to make it drape – just right.
My final commissioned piece was for Miss Scotland – a three quarter, gold, long weave, fake fur coat with a tan silk lining and covered buttons (which were an absolute bugger to make). That was a lifetime ago. It’s been a while since I’ve seen “tailors sleeves” – with elasticated cuffs. Unfortunately I can find no image of Sarah in my Coat (weeps balefully into his hands… not really) so instead I enclose some Fendi images from their rather fabulous website.
