I stated on Monday (via The Social Tailor Facebook page) “Doesn’t matter how good a designer you are if you come out with racist anti Semitic trash you deserve to be canned – let’s all say good bye to John Galliano!” Little thinking it would make the global stoushie it has… I’m also very aware that in our industry there are those that hope this is his Kate Moss moment – straight to camera, sincerity pouring from every orifice an apology, that will allow his genius to continue unabated – although clearly not for Dior or LVMH.
I still remember the stir from his St Martins final year collection in 1984, he was an inspiration to me who that very year was heading to London to study fashion. However seeing his bloated appearance during his arrest made me realise he is standing on the edge of a cliff.
For too long his drive and passion for this industry, producing 15 collections every season have taken their toll on him, living in a cocoon his temperament has been pandered rather than guided to allow that creative flame to continue to sparkle… has it been put out, never to flicker again?
This industry is his life – is it tail between the legs and head back to Gibraltar or is he going to be allowed to get his head down and crack on and wait for the pain to pass knowing that he’s ostracised a large portion of his paying customers?
