I draw back the curtains on Steve Unwin, the Editor-in-Chief for Gary Vaynerchuk, the filter and wordsmith for all his long-form written content.
Steve (or Stunwin) and I have conversed a few times about items either talked about on Gary’s show or questions some colleagues or associates have raised. I recently took the chance to ask Stunwin to be part of our Boys, Beauty and Billionaires series for the Social Tailor.
Tell us about you, what you do and what you love most about life?
I’m a Shakespeare nerd, turned wine dork, turned marketing weasel. I work on Gary Vaynerchuk’s personal brand team figuring out what the present and near-future of content marketing looks like. The thing I love most in life is learning new things (as is evidenced by my batshit career path).
What is it you love most about your business today?
One minute I’m editing a podcast, the next minute I’m copy-editing one of Gary’s articles, the next minute I’m working with a growth hacker on how to market on (read: ruin) a new platform. Then I’m explaining e-sports to a Fortune100 brand before helping to pair six different wines with Thanksgiving pies for a photoshoot. My job is frantic, poorly-defined, and I bloody love it.
If you ran a $billion business from NY how would you like to change the world you live in?
With the massive glut of worthy problems in this world, I think it’s important to attack something one knows. The performing arts are:
1. Inestimably important to the advance of the human race and
2. Inherently unprofitable.
This has lead to a twisted situation in which we’re inundated by tons of trained, passionate young professionals who are desperate for opportunity, while the few who do get to make a decent living do so performing almost exclusively for the rich. It’s fucking bonkers that people are managing to get screwed on both sides of this equation. I don’t know what the solution is, but if I had the capital to throw at it, I’ve a good feeling I could figure something out.

Boys are not known for buying beauty products; do you have a recommendation?
Does shaving cream count? If so, I’m a huge fan of Tribute Supply Co. shaving cream. A great example of someone who sent free product to the office and booked a fan for life!
Did Stunwin “kill it” for you?
