Graeme Black, the Scottish designer that heads up Hugo Boss is featured this month in Instyle magazine. He is loved and reveered by many red carpet girls from Jessica Alba to Devon Aoki and Olivia Palermo to Diane Kruger, interestingly all his fans are girls that have a quirky element to their wardrobe.
Graeme has worked tirelessly, embracing early 20th Century influences, most noteably 40’s interiors in his last collection for the Black label for Hugo Boss. I remember being influenced by 19th century French lingerie which culminated in a fascination for wedding gowns and boned midriffs… I digress. Graeme’s approach is lush and practical which leads to pices that are worn over and over with multiple mixes. It must be his thrifty Scottish upbringing that subcontiously determines this influence; for I suspect his time spent with Zandra Rhodes and John Galliano practicality or reuse never played a big part…
I notice with interest that Graeme’s catwalk also benefitted from a season favourite this year the leather and lace heels; (maybe a post for another time). I’m beginning to realise an unstinting passion for beautifully designed footwear and now that we’re almost into party season will have to visit the High street, camera in hand to assess the do’s and don’ts. Graeame says after 20 years in the business I understand what women want; I on the other hand know what looks good and can advise accordingly but then we all think that don’t we!
