I was lucky enough to be invited to the press launch of a new experience in shoe retail last night.
This retail outlet is situated on Edinburgh’s Castle Street – the only give-away that it exists is a large sign that says “Shhh” with what could only be described as a door man. Customers have to make an appointment, and girls, can I suggest you go with your girl friends – it’s an event. You go down some plush stairs into a beautifully appointed waiting area with a champagne bar off to one side – here you gather yourselves (take a deep breath) and are ushered slowly into the main salon where shoes are displayed like works of art in various ways. You’ll find the most adorable selection, sitting on silk cushions and under glass domes.
There are various collections (read suppliers) priced between £160 to £scary, pumps, ankle boots, leopard print pony skin, patent red heels – the selection is niche but wide, Steven the buyer, has an eclectic taste (he’s always been very dapper); I admire this approach a lot. I haven’t finished…
The whole process of trying on and buying is for you to take your time and have fun – there are leads to plug in your iphone / ipod to listen to your own tunes whilst you parade. If you are lucky enough there’s a VIP suite (with the really expensive shoes) it’s all decked out in cream with lamb skin, everywhere else is very dark.
Pictures from the collection I’ll share soon (and possibly the event).
